USPS Temporary Surcharge

Effective April 26, 2026 - January 17, 2027

USPS has announced a temporary 8% price surcharge on all domestic parcel services. Here's what you need to know.

Why are USPS prices going up?

USPS filed a time limited price adjustment with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) to better align its transportation costs with the market. This is a surcharge imposed directly by USPS - not Atomix. USPS cited rising transportation costs and noted that competitors already charge surcharges that are more than triple this amount (for fuel alone).

How much is the increase?

An 8% surcharge on base postage prices for all domestic parcel services: Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select..

How long will this surcharge last?

The surcharge runs from April 26, 2026 through January 17, 2027. At that point, USPS will determine whether a different long term pricing approach is needed. If no further action is taken, pricing would revert to pre-surcharge levels.

Will my carrier mix change?

Possibly - if you're on rate shopping, our system automatically routes shipments to the lowest cost carrier for each zone and weight. With USPS now 8% more expensive, some shipments that previously went USPS may be routed to FedEx, UPS, or regional carriers instead. This is the system working as intended to keep your shipping costs competitive.

Does this affect all my shipments?

No. Only USPS shipments are affected. FedEx, UPS, and regional carriers are not impacted by this change. If you ship exclusively via USPS, all your shipments will reflect the 8% increase for the duration of the surcharge period.

Do I need to do anything?

No action is needed on your end. If you're on rate shopping, our system will handle carrier selection automatically. If you have a fixed USPS rate card, the surcharge will be applied transparently to your invoices. Reach out to your Account Manager with any questions.
